The ancient cities of Cambodia.

Battambang was so beautiful it was hard to say goodbye, but with much difficulty we managed to get our lovely 3 letters out of bed at 5am to catch the boat to Siem Reap – the city where Angkor temples are. That was one of the most relaxing days we had for a long time – juust cruzin’ for 10 hours with 2 little breaks: one because the engine broke down, second one for lunch. I actually think it was luck that we broke down in the middle of nowhere! Mostly because we jumped off on the shore exactly where 2 peasant houses were located. We could catch a glimpse of people working in the field and play around a little bit. Also we discovered how nice it is to sit on the upper deck of the boat. So we did that for the rest of the trip and baked in the midday sun, admired the nature, the floating villages along the way and waved a lot at local kids. We arrived in Siem Reap, got picked up by a really nice hostel tuk tuk driver who to our surprise handed us wet towels and water – amaaazing after 10h being locked on the lovely boat. Anyways, we grabbed some Khmer food (fried rice with Khmer sausage – not bad, but had better fried rice in Taiwan) and jumped in the hostel pool. Great refreshment and tons of fun! Going out was a disappointment so we tried some fish feet peeling and came back quite early and arranged a sunrise trip to the most famous temple around here: Angkor Wat.

So yeah, got up 4.30am and took a tuk tuk for a drive around the “Big Circle”. Sunrise at Angkor Wat was disappointing. Sooo many tourists, it was really difficult to enjoy – camera flashes everywhere, annoying people who just couldn’t shut up and let me enjoy my well deserved sunrise. The upper side of getting up at this unhealthy hour was that we got to visit the temple when it was still pretty much empty and we did the other temples (including a really remote one) in time for lunch back in the city. The temples were absolutely fabulous! Remember Tomb Rider? It’s something like that, only more and in reality. It’s amazing to realize that on the time when they were built Christianity was brought to Poland; we still lived in straw huts at the time. Did I mention already that every lousy restaurant and hotel in Cambodia has free wifi?

  1. ... and what would you have done if the engine had not been repaired ? It seems to be diffcult ask for help in the middle on nowhere.

    Mayby next time.

  2. It's amazing to hear that you're getting up so early, around the time you used to go to bed in Taipei, as far as I remember :)

Oh, and you should've told those philistines that it's useless trying to take a shot of a sunrise with a flash - they're gonna have lousy pictures anyways :D

    Cheers from drizzly PL!
